I really cared about the characters, which is a lot different from most summer blockbusters. Why did you think the ending was overly sentimental? Looking at the movie as Joe’s personal journey he had to let go of his mom just like the monster had to let go of his animosity towards humans for torturing him. Sure I felt like the ending was rushed especially with respect to the monster and it could have been more complicated, but I think those feelings are a result of the fact that we loved the characters so much we wanted to see them on-screen for more than the ending allowed. Agree?
