As far as this list goes I think you have the right idea but sort of missed the mark. To have a list of only 10 movies and the majority of them old and then throw in a new one isn't really a "guide". First you would need to define what horror actually is. Then decide if a movie is really a horror movie or is it a thriller, slasher, survival, supernatural. Sure there are many sub-genres, but this is important in understanding not only if a movie is a horror but why its a horror. Then you can understand why it works as a horror. Its understandable that 90% of your list would be older films since they "paved the way" for many of today's films. I suggest a revised list and one that spreads over various sub-genres. Loot at movies like Session 9, Event Horizon, The Innocents, The Strangers, The Others. These all have in my opinion, set themselves apart. Also look at the foreign films, The Orphanage, Audition, Ringu, A Tale Of Two Sisters, Dead Snow, The Devil's Backbone, High Tension, Martyrs, Ichi The Killer. Exploring different cultures ways of showing horror is a great way to introduce yourself into the horror genre. After all you wouldn't only eat hamburgers if you were introducing yourself to food would you?
